A Recap of an Unforgettable Pallet Tour

In May, Stirling Group hosted a small group of manufacturers on a focused tour of Europe’s most advanced pallet production facilities. The experience offered a firsthand look at how large-scale automation is transforming the industry and highlighted just how much more is possible with the right systems in place.

Across every site, one thing stood out: when a production line is designed for flow, efficiency, and minimal manual handling, output can reach impressive levels. As we explored in our article Inside a Large-Scale Automated Pallet Factory, some European operations are producing up to 12,000 pallets per day with just 30 staff, demonstrating what’s achievable in the local market with the right approach.

The group visited leading manufacturers and Stirling Group machinery partners including Costa, Delta, Salvador, CM Machine, Joutech, and Alpiscan. Each stop offered practical insight into automation, line design, robotics integration, and the importance of quality equipment in delivering consistent, high-volume output.

The tour also covered sustainable practices and the evolving role of people within automated environments. It sparked valuable conversations about how Australian and New Zealand manufacturers can adopt smarter systems to drive productivity and plan for long-term success.

Tour Testimony

Here’s what Justin Wecks shared about his experience:

“I had an amazing experience on the recent Stirling Group tour. Visiting the pallet manufacturers was eye-opening—what stood out most was the difference in timber quality compared to what we’re used to and the efficient running of their businesses. It really gave me a new perspective.

The suppliers we met were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. It was fantastic to see the full operation at Bedogna Imballaggi, and I was equally impressed by Costa, Delta Salvador, CM Machine, Joutech, and Alpiscan. Each business showed deep expertise in their field and made us feel very welcome.

What I saw and learned—especially around automation—will definitely influence how we plan for the future. It highlighted how much smoother and more efficient our own operations could become.

To anyone considering a tour: don’t hesitate. I had a great time, no regrets, and would definitely go again. Simon, Leon and Craig were fantastic hosts and made the most of the time we had.”

“Every step of the way, Stirling showed that they could partner with us in a meaningful way. We weren’t looking for a quick set-and-forget arrangement. We wanted a genuine collaboration that would see us through from consultancy and installation to operation and beyond.”

Planer Sander

“Stirling Machinery’s Planer Sander replaced the two existing sanders we had onsite. Finishing tabletops, a process that originally took two to three hours across two machines, has now been reduced to a matter of minutes in a one-pass finish. The team took the time to understand my operation, how it is run,and what we were looking for in terms of increased capacity and timber finish, and came back with a tailored solution that ticked all of the boxes. As a furniture maker of 35 years, I have been very impressed by the level of service, support and results Stirling has provided. From adding one machine, we have gained time, quality, space, output and efficiency and I couldn’t be happier.”

They want to see our customers getting the best product, they don’t just want to sell something.
